I am using Eclipse now for php dev things. On my laptop I was very unsatisfied with the performance of Eclipse, even though I have enough RAM it was too slow.

This is only because when you install Eclipse with apt-get it uses the slower java-gcj vm. To change this first install the Java VM from Sun if not already done.
Next go to /etc/eclipse/java_home and uncomment the first line which looks like:
#/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj
Afterwards I added a new line which points to SUNs JVM:

/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.00

Edit: To install Java from Sun you have to

sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jdk

then with

java -version
you will get the running version
and define it as a default

sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-1.6.0-sun

Yesterday my HDD finnally gave up. Lately the notebook became slower and slower and the HDD louder and louder. After opening the small lid on the right side, I realized that there is no 1,8″ HDD built in. In fact its a normal 2.5″ but for replacing the HDD the whole notebook had to be disassembled.

The second difficulty was that the HDD is not a normal 5V no it is a 3.3V which you can only get through OEM support. I have no guarantee and anyway it will take too long so after a while I found a guide how to tweak a 5V HDD to become a 3.3V. It was quite easy I replaced the 40GB HDD with a new Hitachi 160GB, broke the 2 pins as described in the guide and the Computer recognized the new drive

The only bad thing which I have to figure out now is how to clone the old HDD so that it also takes the hidden partition to the new disc. I tried with Acronis but the software could only see my normal partition. Anyway at the moment it is only important that my computer runs again and for cloning etc I got an external CD drive. So it is not that difficult to install an OS without that hidden partition.

Another good source for the R3-5 I also found on my quest.

next you have to dump the actual settings to a file. Do it with “netsh -c interface dump>conf1.txt”

Now create a *.bat file and put in:

For changing settings you can create more conf.txt files and more *.bat

In my case I installed a German version of WinXp on the from japan imported Notebook. In the beginning you should backup the DRIVER folder which you can find on the C: Drive somewhere.

After you have done this you can start installing windows with the install CD.

When you finished it starts in windows. Everything seems to be good install all the drivers, which also should work well.

If you cannot handle the keyboard you should install the correct driver for the keyboard which is 106/109 japanese keyboard layout. Also don’t forget the language extnesion for east-asian languages, so you also have the language bar in the taskbar.

You will realize that the fancy buttons like volume, playdvd etc and the brightness buttons (which are accessible over the “Fn” key) doesn’t work. For this you should go to vaio-link.com to download the correct utilities.

The bad think here is that the service will tell you that the serial number which you have to enter is not correct, so you cannot access. In my case I called a friend who gave me his serial number (he bought his notebook in europe). In vaio-link.com you can also select to download drivers from different notebooks.

For the VGN-72B I selected the VGN-T2XP/L which looks quite the same. Downloaded the “Preinstalled Utilities” and it worked, the only application which made trouble was the “wireless switch application”, but its not neccessary because it works even without the application.

My configuration for the internet was normally with a Speedtouch 510 Modem and a Netgear 814 WLAN Router. The Router sucked, crashes when you have more than 100 connections. So I read around and realized that it is possible to use the Modem, which is in fact a Router with DHCP etc as a ROUTER

First of all you need to get the FW update <a href="http://www.speedtouch.nl/downloads/510_Upgrade_427.exe"title="fw update" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.speedtouch.nl');">here .

Now you need to update the firmware. I suggest you backup your old config, just in case.

Next u restart the Router once and disconnect it from the splitter.

In “Advance” -> “System” you select <a href="http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/%7Ea0442336/st510/configs/STrouter.rar"title="config" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.unet.univie.ac.at');">this configuration file and upload it. This configuration file is for the Austrian Provider AON. Just have a look in the config and change DNS adress as you wish.

Next you should put in your User and password, “save all” and restart.

Have fun!
